The Perfect Time for Orthodontic Treatment!

The pre-teen/teen years are the most common time for growing children to get orthodontic treatment, especially braces. The reason that so many orthodontists recommend treatment during this time is because children are losing the last of their baby teeth.

Once the growing child’s adult teeth have fully come in their jaw is relatively set and their teeth are permanent. From this point, any potential problems are unlikely to solve themselves.

If your growing child is having problems with their jaw or teeth, orthodontic treatment is the best way to fix any issues and possibly avoid complicated surgeries or procedures.

Treatment Phases

Unlike with younger children, Phase I treatment doesn’t apply for teenagers (usually between ages eleven and thirteen) because most of their permanent teeth have emerged. This is why we recommend Phase II Treatment for children in this age group.

Our goal with Phase II Treatment is to position your teen’s permanent teeth to improve their appearance and function. We accomplish this by using braces or Invisalign for a period lasting between a year to a year and a half.

If your child experienced the improvements of Phase I Treatment when they were younger, Phase II Treatment will require less participation. This means that the teen may not need as many rubber bands or headgear to improve their problem areas. Phase I Treatment could also mean your teenager could spend less time in braces!

Benefits of Teen Evaluation & Treatment

One of the biggest advantages to getting pre-teen/teen orthodontic treatment is that the growing child can potentially avoid adult treatment. The longer someone goes without orthodontic treatment, the more difficult possible treatment solutions become.

One reason that getting treatment as an adult is more drastic is because the earlier teeth are set, the more they will hold. If teeth have been in place for 20 years and you try to change them, they will naturally want to go back to their old shape. Therefore, getting orthodontics in your teens can help you avoid more complicated treatment and serious surgeries later on.

Begin Your Treatment Today!

Being a teenager is the most common age for getting braces because all the adult teeth are now present and it is also possible to take advantage of the remaining jaw growth to correct the skeletal problems.

Most importantly, getting treatment at this age can help avoid complications later on during adult treatment. Having braces doesn’t have to be embarrassing either! We offer Invisalign and colorful braces for teens so that they can smile with confidence.

Teens can improve the functionality and appearance of their smile quickly and efficiently if they maintain good oral care while living with braces. Get started with teen orthodontics in Richmond Hill and our team at Smiles on Yonge can help determine the best treatment option. The sooner your teen get started with braces, the sooner they will come off.
